On the Ukraine front
Russia is also relying on mercenaries in the Ukraine war. Several Chinese fighters complain about the inhumane conditions and make serious allegations.
Kyiv – The evidence about Chinese citizens in the Ukraine war is growing stronger every day. In addition to the data published by the Ukrainian intelligence service, the Russian investigative media outlet Important Stories has also collected data on Chinese citizens in Vladimir Putin's service.
Beyond geopolitics and the strategies of powerful men, the focus is on people whose cries for help against inhumane conditions are becoming increasingly louder. Chinese mercenaries, in particular, are said to be exposed to particularly harsh conditions and discrimination within the Russian army.
"What a Soldier Really Goes Through" – Chinese Fighter Warns of Ukraine War
"Don't come. There's nothing good to be achieved here," warned Chinese soldier Zhao Rui from Chongqing, according to the Kyiv Independent, before falling victim to a Ukrainian drone.
A Chinese assault soldier named "Macron" also shared his experiences with journalist Chai Jing, saying: "I realized I could die here one day, so I decided to share some real experiences," Macron said, stating that he was near Bakhmut. "Since the Chinese haven't been to war for a long time, I wanted to show what a soldier, especially a foreign one, really goes through in war."
Accusations of Racism: Russia Allegedly Sacrifice Chinese Soldiers on the Front Lines in the Ukraine War
He also warned his compatriots about the widespread racism against non-white recruits within the Russian ranks. "Since the training camp, there has been severe racial discrimination, especially against Blacks, Arabs, and Chinese," Macron said. His statements are consistent with reports from other mercenaries.
According to the Kyiv Independent, the Chinese fighters are said to be burned to death on the front lines. Russia is reportedly reluctant to send its regular Slavic troops to the front and is therefore spending money to recruit mercenaries for front-line attacks where the chances of survival are extremely slim.
"Death in just eight to ten hours" – Chinese mercenary complains about conditions in the Ukraine war
Newsweek also reports, citing the Russian investigative outlet Important Stories, that several former Chinese fighters have described the harsh conditions and substandard equipment on the front lines.
Li Jianwei, a 41-year-old former soldier and mercenary who signed up to fight for Russia in December 2023, said in a video report posted on Chinese social media: "The mortality rate between entering the battlefield and death was only eight to ten hours on average." He also criticized the quality of the ammunition supplied by Russia, such as mortars, calling it "poor."
In addition, the Russian military has apparently refused to release many of the Chinese soldiers after their contracts expired. "We will not terminate your contract until we win the war," one Chinese fighter told the blog Lei's Real World in July, citing his commander's refusal to release him from service.
