Berlin (dts news agency) - In view of the expected new elections, the SPD is planning to bring forward its federal party conference, which was originally scheduled for June.
"We are currently still in the process of agreeing a location, but I assume that it will take place here in Berlin at the end of January or the beginning of February," said SPD general secretary Matthias Miersch on Monday after his party's committee meetings. The federal party conference will also see the selection of the candidate for chancellor, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz running for the office again.
With regard to the election date, Miersch confirmed that SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich had been tasked with clarifying with the opposition when it could take place. He assumed that Mützenich and CDU leader Friedrich Merz would be able to reach an agreement.
