When Olaf Scholz makes a statement after Lindner's expulsion, not a word of self-criticism comes from his lips. His reckoning with the finance minister seems petty. The chancellor has missed an opportunity.
This appearance is historic - rarely has so much whining and lack of ability to assess oneself been seen at such a politically decisive moment.
The chancellor appears contrite in front of the cameras. Olaf Scholz explains why he is firing his finance minister Christian Lindner. The most unpopular chancellor Germany has ever had blames the FDP leader for the failure of the traffic light coalition.
The Scholz statement after Lindner's expulsion is enraptured
Just a moment ago, Scholz was sitting alone in the brightly lit chancellery, bent over documents. The talks with the FDP had failed. Now it was time to find words that would support the state and bring an end to this hapless government. This image of Scholz behind glass seems strangely detached. And so does his statement.
Not a word of self-awareness or even self-criticism. Just lamentations and an insulted reckoning with Lindner. Lindner's tactics were petty, says great thinker Scholz. The liberal broke his trust several times.
You wait for tears to well up in his eyes. The story is childishly simple: here the good Olaf, always concerned about the well-being of the country, there the evil and sly misanthropist Christian. The "imposition on Germany", as Scholz puts it in his tirade.
At one point it almost becomes funny
In the same breath, Scholz dares to praise the achievements of the traffic light coalition. It almost becomes funny when he celebrates the government for achievements in precisely those areas for which it is most criticized. For the supposedly successful efforts to ensure energy supply and business location.
Scholz missed an opportunity today. This government could have resigned together to clear the way for a new beginning. With dignity and without mutual insults. He led the way, as the man who the majority of people in Germany have long found intolerable.
He would rather put up with the population for a while longer. At least until January, when he asks the question of confidence.
