AfD party leader Alice Weidel claims to have known nothing about her grandfather's Nazi past. She told the "Welt" newspaper. The newspaper had researched the past of Hans Weidel (1903-1985) and is now presenting his life in meticulous detail, based on documents from the Federal Archives and the Polish State Archives.
According to this, Hans Weidel had joined the NSDAP in Leobschütz, today's Glubczyce, in 1932, and shortly afterwards he also joined the SS. Weidel became the NSDAP faction leader and, according to research, was the district group leader of the National Socialist Law Enforcement League. Weidel was drafted shortly after Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. From July 1941 he was an army judge and was praised for his work by his superiors.
After the Second World War, Hans Weidel was unsuccessfully investigated
According to research by the “Welt”, his promotion to senior staff judge in 1944 was supposedly carried out via the Führer’s headquarters, signed by the “Führer” Adolf Hitler. Hitler was the supreme judge of the military justice system. According to research by historian Claudia Bade, the judges under his command are said to have imposed around 50,000 death sentences, of which 20,000 were carried out.
According to research, Hans Weidel was investigated after the Second World War, in 1948, as well as in 1977 and 1979, but according to the report, all proceedings came to nothing.
Weidel claims to have known nothing about her grandfather’s biography. She told the “Welt” that she was unaware of her grandfather’s role during the Nazi era. There was no contact with him "due to family dissonances."
