Bat bites Washington State Ferry crew member
SEATTLE—A Washington State ferry worker is recovering after being bitten by a bat on the ferry.
Officials said the bizarre and rare incident happened on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route this morning.
State ferry officials said the worker on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route picked up what she thought was garbage on the car deck—but it turned out to be a bat and it bit her.
Crew members captured the bat alive and put it in a cardboard box, then they waited for animal control to take it.
Officials said she went to a clinic to get checked out once the ferry docked.
“I can honestly say that I’ve never ever heard of anyone being bit by a bat on a state ferry up until today,” said Ian Sterling with Washington State Ferries. “It’s a good cautionary tale. This lady didn’t realize what was laying there on the car deck—I don’t think any of us would either— but I’m sure people will be a little more careful when they see something and pick it up with their bare hand.”
Wildlife experts said it’s bat maternity season so it's typical to see bats but what’s unusual is for a bat to bite someone at all.
“It’s very rare,” said Captain Alan Myers with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Only two cases of bats transmitting rabies to a person in the last 50 years in our state.”
State fish and wildlife experts said 10 percent of the bat population in Washington carries the rabies virus.
“It’s important that if someone is bitten by a bat that they want to take ultra-precautions and have that animal tested and certainly want to make sure they themselves consult with a physician as well after cleaning the wound if they’re bitten,” said Myers.
WDFW experts said they’ve been getting a lot of calls about bat sightings recently, so people should remember never to touch them with bare hands.
If you encounter a bat on your porch or on the ground, experts said find thick gloves and put them on.
Use a dustpan and brush to scoop it into a cardboard box.
If the bat is injured take it to the animal control shelter and if it’s not injured, you can take it by the base of tree so it can climb the tree and fly away. Experts said bats can’t fly from the ground.
