Ban of Yulia Samoylova entry to Ukraine
For more details on this topic, see Russia–Ukraine relations in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Russian singer Yulia Samoylova was selected to represent Russia with the song "Flame Is Burning". However, she was issued a three-year travel ban on entering Ukraine by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU),[114] for illegally crossing the Ukrainian border during her 2015 visit to Crimea - a region that was annexed by Russia in 2014.[115][116] According to Ukrainian law, entering Crimea by foreigners via Russia is illegal.[115] Samoylova has stated that she did perform in Crimea in 2015.[117][118][119]The EBU responded by stating that it was continuing to ensure that all entrants would be able to perform in Kiev, and their disappointment about the lack of compromise from the broadcasters.[120] A compromise was offered to Channel One Russia from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to allow Samoylova to perform her entry via satellite link from a venue of the broadcaster's choice,[121] which was later turned down by the Russian broadcaster and the Ukrainian government.[122][123]
The chief of the EBU, Ingrid Deltenre, condemned Ukraine's actions, describing them as "abusing the ESC for political reasons" and "absolutely unacceptable"[124] On 13 April, Russian broadcaster Channel One announced their withdrawal from the contest and stated that the broadcaster may not air the contest.[41][125][42]
United States
- – After the interval performance of Justin Timberlake during the final of the 2016 contest, it has been speculated that the United States may participate in a future contest, similar to the interval performance of Jessica Mauboy during the second semi-final of the 2014 contest and Australia's subsequent debut the following year.[78] While Logo TV broadcast the final of the 2016 contest, the channel does not have associate EBU membership.[79][80]
