Trump has pledged to give Americans tax reform for Christmas and now has less than a month to make good on his promise.
House
Republicans have already passed a bill, but it differs in critical
areas from the legislation that's under consideration in the Senate.
The
president will play cheerleader to Republicans in the upper chamber
when he visits with them on their turf this week in his third trip to
the Capitol building in the last five weeks.
Republicans
have a razor-thin majority in the Senate and care spare a mere two
votes, with Vice President Mike Pence playing tiebreaker, if the bill
receives no support from Democrats, the route that is expected.
It
remains unclear as to whether the ruling party will be able to satisfy
enough of the dissenters, of which there are at least three, by the time
the legislation is called to the floor.
GOP
leaders and the White House are confident that Republicans can come to a
tax overhaul compromise if the Senate is able to clear the first
legislative hurdle, and that is where Trump, who favors parts of both
bills, will direct his energy.
Trump and Pence will meet with members of the Senate Finance Committee at the White House tomorrow.
Lawmakers
are also on deadline to pass a budget before the end of next week, or
they'll be responsible for an inopportunely-timed government shutdown
that hits just as the winter holidays are underway.
Funding
for the government runs out on Friday, Dec. 8. Democrats in Congress
are threatening to withhold their votes unless leadership allows a bill
to save the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program onto
the floor, as well.
'Let me tell you,
I'm not prepared to go home for the holidays until we get our work
done,' Democrat Dick Durbin, a top-ranking senator, told CNN on Sunday.

GOP
Sen. Lindsey Graham indicated in the same interview that he would be
willing to throw his lot in with Democrats to establish a federal policy
that protects illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children from
being deported.
'The way I look at the
end-of-the-year bill, it is a chance to really do some good for the
country as a whole,' he said, citing his concerns about inadequate
funding for the Defense Department.
President
Trump has said he wants comprehensive immigration reform that includes a
check for his border wall and a transition to a merit-based arrival
system or he won't consider legislation that comes his way.
Graham, who's been spending time with Trump recently, told CNN Sunday, 'There's a deal to be done.'
'For
the DREAM Act, I think you could get strong border security and a break
in chain migration. If you can put those three things together and put
it on the end-of-the-year spending bill, that would be a heck of an
accomplishment for 2017,' he said.
A
third issue facing lawmakers is the $44 billion request the White House
submitted for hurricane relief funds that would benefit Puerto Rico, the
Virgin Islands and other areas damaged by last summer's violent storms.
Conservatives
would prefer to offset aid with spending cuts, pitting them against
representatives from the affected areas who say the package is too
small.

Trump
and the GOP are also caught in an internal fight over Moore, the
Republican Senate nominee in Alabama who has been accused of sexually
harassing and assaulting teens.
The president suggested last week, as he left the White House for Florida, that he could campaign for Moore.
In
a series of Sunday morning tweets Trump reminded that he endorsed
Moore's opponent in the primary, appointed-senator Luther Strange, as he
tore into the Democrat in the race, Doug Jones.
He did not refer to Moore by name in the take down of Jones yet suggested he'd be a better bet than 'Liberal Jones.'
'The
last thing we need in Alabama and the U.S. Senate is a Schumer/Pelosi
puppet who is WEAK on Crime, WEAK on the Border, Bad for our Military
and our great Vets, Bad for our 2nd Amendment, AND WANTS TO RAISES TAXES
TO THE SKY. Jones would be a disaster!' Trump said.
Also
hitting home this week for the president are the special counsel
interviews that have expanded to include his top aides, including Hope
Hicks, his communications director.
Ty
Cobb, the White House lawyer navigating the Department of Justice's
Russia probe, has said that he expects senior White House officials like
Hicks to complete their interviews shortly after the Thanksgiving
holiday.
A severance between the
president's legal team and former National Security Adviser Michael
Flynn's, plus the White House interviews, are seen as a sign that the
investigation that's overseen by Robert Mueller may be wrapping up.

The Trump's son, Barron, also donned a warm coat over his white polo shirt when they landed back in D.C.
President Trump had earlier ended his Thanksgiving holiday at Mar-A-Lago the same way he began it - by playing a round of golf.
The
President arrived at his Trump International Golf Club on Sunday
morning, just as he was tweeting about the Alabama Senate race.
He
had played golf on Saturday with legend Jack Nicklaus. On Friday, he
hit the links with with Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and Brad Faxon.
Trump visited various golf courses five days in a row over long, Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
President
Trump and Melania did visit members of the state's Coast Guard on
Thursday where they served them Thanksgiving lunch at their station in
Riviera Beach before the president retreated to one of his golf courses.
The president spoke to troops via video before that.
