For the second time before the 2024 US election, Donald Trump apparently narrowly escaped an attempted murder! A 58-year-old man allegedly tried to shoot him on Sunday (September 15) on Trump's own golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Initial information about the man arrested has now been made public.
Alleged assassination attempt on golf course prevented
According to the report, the man is Ryan Wesley R. He is said to have been hiding in a bush on the golf course with an assault rifle when bodyguards caught him. Secret Service employees opened fire. R. was initially able to escape in a car, but was then caught a short time later on a highway near the crime scene. The FBI assumes that the assassination attempt was made on the 78-year-old ex-president.
Next assassination attempt on Trump: Ukraine war as motive?
In an initial reaction, Donald Trump told his supporters: "I will never give up!" Shots were fired near him, but he was "safe and well". His opponent Kamala Harris called on everyone to exercise restraint. "I condemn political violence. We must all do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to further violence," she is quoted as saying in a statement from the White House in Washington.
According to US media reports, the suspect is said to have been involved in the Ukraine's defensive struggle against Putin's Russia in the past. He is said to have tried to recruit Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban as soldiers for the Ukrainian side. He is also said to have asked billionaire Elon Musk how much US dollars he would charge for a rocket. He wanted to "equip it with explosives for Putin's bunker on the Black Sea in order to destroy him".
It is still unclear whether his pro-Ukrainian stance could have been a motive for the attempted assassination of Trump, who is seeking a quick peace deal with Putin after his re-election.
