It's not only embarrassing for Donald Trump, the President of the United States, it also represents a serious security breach. But that's not all: Following the leak of the chat group of leading US government officials, the watchdog organization "American Oversight" has now filed a lawsuit against those involved.
This affects the most important members of Trump's cabinet. The organization, which focuses on investigating and exposing government malpractice, is demanding consequences, according to the US magazine "Huffington Post."
Trump in Crisis: Chat Leak Threatens National Security
A federal judge should prosecute the accused, including Secretary of Defense Hegseth, Secretary of State Rubio, and Vice President Vance, for violating the Federal Archives Act. American Oversight finds that they failed in their duty to secure official communications.
The chat in question, on the messaging service Signal, allegedly discussed the military action against the Houthi militia in Yemen. Apparently, it went unnoticed that prominent journalist Jeffrey Goldberg had been invited to the group, having joined it through a link, presumably sent by mistake, from National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He later published the entire incident.
Trump himself described the incident as "not serious." While Hegseth denied the allegations, Waltz stated that he "takes full responsibility." Government officials are permitted to use "Signal" or similar services. They must record official communications for two years, regardless of the level of confidentiality.
Lawsuit against US minister!
According to the Huffington Post, Waltz ignored this, however. The Trump advisor activated a feature that automatically deletes messages within one month at the latest.
Chukwu, a lawyer with the organization American Oversight, commented: "What the Trump administration did was simply dangerous, reckless, and irresponsible, and, frankly, a direct threat to our national security."
She continued: "As has been reported, state-sponsored hackers are increasingly attempting to infiltrate Signal chats." Recently, the US Department of Defense issued a warning that a security flaw had been discovered in Signal.
