UN General Assembly demands an “immediate” end to the war from Russia

The UN General Assembly has passed a new resolution by a clear majority calling on Russia to end the war in Ukraine "immediately". In Thursday's vote in New York, 140 countries voted in favor of the non-binding text, 38 abstained and five states voted against.
The new resolution "demands the immediate cessation of hostilities by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, in particular all attacks on civilians and civilian targets." The text calls for an end to the military offensive, as well as a ceasefire and "resumption of the path of dialogue and negotiations".
At the beginning of March, 141 countries had already adopted a first resolution that "calls on Russia to immediately stop using force against Ukraine". US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield called the resolution "building on" the March 2 vote.
