Zelenskyj rejects presidential election / Support from Berlin
German foreign policymakers from the coalition and opposition support the decision of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyj to postpone the holding of a presidential election in Ukraine. “I consider the postponement of the presidential elections to be unavoidable,” said the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Bundestag, Michael Roth (SPD), to the editorial network Germany. The war makes it impossible to hold fair and free democratic elections.
“The civil infrastructure is bombed by Russia every day and many Ukrainians live under Russian occupation or have fled abroad,” said Roth. As soon as elections are safely possible again on the territory of Ukraine, they should definitely take place, emphasized Roth - and referred to similar regulations in the Federal Republic for comparison: "The German Basic Law also stipulates that new elections for the Federal President and the Bundestag can only take place after the end of one Defense case takes place.”
