Queen and Philip honoured as Westminster Abbey’s same bells chime 70 years after wedding

The bells are set to ring out to commemorate when the married Philip Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh, 70 years ago.

The Queen is the first monarch to celebrate an impressive platinum wedding anniversary.

From 1pm, the Abbey’s Company of Ringers will begin a peal consisting of 5,070 changes - with the 70 a tribute to the platinum anniversary.

The Abbey is also where the Queen was crowned in 1953 and where the funerals of the Queen Mother and Diana, Princess of Wales were held.
The Queen and Prince Philip attended thanksgiving services at the Abbey to commemorate their silver, golden and diamond wedding anniversaries, but this milestone is not being marked with such a service.

The Queen's marriage to Prince Philip has stood the test of time

Seventy years ago when they married, their fairytale wedding was seen as a morale boost in the difficult years after World War Two.
The partnership between the Queen and Prince Philip has remained intact even when the younger generation's marriages have fallen apart.
The Queen’s wedding dress was designed by Normal Hartnell and made of ivory silk decorated with 10,000 hand-embroidered pearls.

Queen Elizabeth II marries Prince Philip in 1947

Seventy years ago in 1947, millions of Britons tuned their radio sets to listen to the coverage of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
The ceremony was such a humble affair that the Queen even had to collect ration coupon for the material for her wedding dress. The royal couple spent their honeymoon at the home of Lord Mountbatten at Badlands in Hampshire and at Birchall estate in Balmoral.
Just a year after Elizabeth and Philip made their wedding vows at Westminster Abbey, the Princess gave birth to the current heir to the throne, Prince Charles.

Many ESC fans from all over the world are so very sad because we lost Joy Fleming - one of the best singers ever.
