"Ideological declaration of war"
France's former foreign minister Dominique de Villepin warns against Trump. The world is at a turning point. Europe must wake up.
Paris - France's former foreign minister Dominique de Villepin has warned against the Europeans allowing themselves to become vassals of the USA. In the new US government of Donald Trump there is a desire "to make this Europe subordinate to the USA and dependent on it," said Villepin in an interview with Spiegel, adding: "I would even speak of an undertaking of subjugation, of the plan to make the Europeans vassals of the USA."
For this reason, the European states must "finally open their eyes." Trump is not only questioning the post-war world and security order - but the USA wants to reshape Europe with an "ultra-nationalist and authoritarian vision," Villepin told Der Spiegel.
Trump's USA has "ideologically" declared war on Europe
Villepin described US Vice President JD Vance's speech at the Munich Security Conference as an "ideological declaration of war and a frontal attack on everything that is dear to us, on the democratic principles of Europe." Villepin therefore called for the Europeans to now "declare a state of emergency and agree on a common approach." The European heads of state and government must define a common strategy and take Europe's fate into their own hands.
The 71-year-old described the transatlantic relationship between Europe and the USA as deeply divided. European countries can no longer rely on US protection. Villepin was skeptical as to whether the USA under Trump would feel bound by Article 5 of NATO. He questioned whether the US government would defend a NATO member that was under attack. "The Trump administration has not hesitated to publicly humiliate its European friends. They no longer behave like allies. This clearly represents a historic turning point."
Pistorius criticizes Vance for speech at Munich Security Conference
At the Munich Security Conference, JD Vance claimed that democracy and freedom of expression in Europe were at risk. The US politician later spoke out in favor of supporting the AfD in Germany. German politicians such as Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) sharply criticized this.
Macron wants to warn Trump about Putin
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he will warn Trump about a strategic mistake in dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During his upcoming trip to Washington, Macron wants to convince the US president that "it is in his interest to work with the Europeans at the moment."
Macron wanted to make it clear to Trump that Russia must not take over Ukraine, because then Putin's forces would "take back Ukraine and its army, which is one of the largest in Europe, with all our equipment, including American equipment," Macron said. That would be a "huge strategic mistake."
