AfD founder Lucke writes to Berliner Zeitung: My party only exists because Merkel has broken European law

Berliner Zeitung AfD founder Lucke writes to Berliner Zeitung: My party only exists because Merkel has broken European law 4 hours • 1 minute reading time Bernd Lucke is a professor of macroeconomics at the University of Hamburg. In 2013, he founded the AfD together with several colleagues. In a letter to the editor of the Berliner Zeitung, economist Bernd Lucke, one of the founders of the AfD, refers to former Chancellor Angela Merkel's criticism of the actions of CDU chairman Friedrich Merz. Last week, he introduced migration plans to the Bundestag and accepted votes from the AfD. Merkel described the actions as wrong in a statement. She scolds the CDU leader because the AfD agrees to motions that the CDU considers to be correct. The motions are wrong and Merz should act in accordance with European law. What Ms Merkel is careful not to mention: The AfD only came into being because she, the then Chancellor, had broken European law: During the euro crisis, Ms Merkel ensured that Germany financed the national debts of Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland through bailout packages worth billions. She did this even though European law (Article 125 TFEU) clearly states: "A Member State shall not be liable for the obligations of another Member State and shall not assume responsibility for such obligations." The AfD was only founded because of this breach of law.
