Explosive Polls: Majority of Americans Believe the Economy Has Worsened After Nearly 100 Days of Trump

Business Insider Explosive Polls: Majority of Americans Believe the Economy Has Worsened After Nearly 100 Days of Trump John L. Dorman • 1 hour • 2 minutes read Donald Trump has been President of the United States for over 100 days. Last year, the economy was one of the most important issues that helped Donald Trump win a second term in the White House. However, almost 100 days into his second term, voters remain unimpressed. The hoped-for economic boom failed to materialize. Instead, citizens are more concerned and express dissatisfaction with the President's handling of inflation and tariffs. Recent polls paint a bleak picture for the US President. Poor Polls for Trump In the latest Washington Post-Ipsos poll, conducted from April 18 to 22, Trump's approval rating on the economy was 39 percent, while 61 percent of adults disapproved of the president's performance on this key issue. Particularly controversial: The survey found that only 21 percent of respondents said the economy had improved under Trump. On the other hand, 53 percent of respondents said the economy had worsened since Trump's second inauguration. In particular, Trump's handling of tariffs was disapproved of by 64 percent of adults. When asked about the recent volatility of the stock market, more than 2 to 1 adults (67 percent to 31 percent) opposed Trump's handling of this issue. Inflation is troubling citizens In another recent CBS News/YouGov poll, conducted from April 23 to 25, a majority—this time 58 percent—also disapproved of Trump's economic policies. When it came to inflation, one of Trump's favorite issues in the campaign against Joe Biden, voters were even more disappointed with the Republican. About 62 percent of adults disapproved of his handling of this issue. The Role of Tariff Policy Democrats have attacked Trump's trade policies, arguing that he has too much power to set tariffs without congressional approval. Trump has also faced notable opposition from Republicans regarding tariffs. Seven senators have joined Democrats in legislating on the issue. Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on countries around the world earlier this month, only to issue a 90-day pause for many of them a few days later. However, Trump's 10 percent base tariff remains in effect for most countries. The particularly high tariffs on Chinese goods will also remain in place. Supply chain researchers who recently spoke to Business Insider said that Americans could see higher prices if Trump continues his confrontational trade policy.
