US President Donald Trump is burdening China's economy with his punitive tariffs.
Chinese industry is facing challenges. Numerous factories are scaling back production and seeking new markets in response to the latest US tariffs, CNBC reports. Experts like Cameron Johnson of Tidalwave Solutions are already noticing the impact on jobs. "I know several factories that have sent half their employees home," Johnson told CNBC.
China-US trade severely impacted
According to the report, Donald Trump's sharp increase in US import tariffs and China's retaliatory measures have had a greater impact on trade than the COVID-19 crisis.
To mitigate the effects of Donald Trump's punitive tariffs, Chinese exporters are trying new sales strategies. This includes live streaming, for example, at clothing manufacturer Woodswool. After the Chinese company canceled all US orders, Woodswool is now using Baidu's livestreaming platform.
The use of Virtual Humans, a technology developed by the trading platform Baidu, opens up new sales channels for Chinese companies. Woodswool and other Chinese companies hope that these artificial salespeople can increase sales.
German politicians look to China with concern
German politicians recently expressed alarm at the risk that China could boost its sales to the EU and Germany to offset the loss of business with the US. If China flooded the German market with even more goods, local manufacturers would come under even greater pressure.
China benefited greatly from trade with the US
According to Statista, China's trade with the US totaled $582.5 billion (around €510 billion) in 2024. China sold goods worth around $439 billion to the United States. China imported only $143.6 billion worth of goods from the US. This means that China sells three times as much to the USA as it imports from there.
