Ex-Vice President Mike Pence has warned Donald Trump about the consequences of his Ukraine policy. This could lead to Russia attacking a NATO state.
Ex-Vice President Mike Pence has warned US President Donald Trump that his stance on Ukraine could lead to a Russian invasion of a NATO country. Trump recently declared that Ukraine "may one day belong to Russia". "If Ukraine falls, it will only be a matter of time before Russia attacks a NATO country that our troops must defend," Pence said, according to Newsweek. Article 5 of the NATO Charter states that an attack on one NATO member is considered an attack on all members. Member states are obliged to take measures to ensure NATO's security, including the use of military force.
Which NATO states will Trump defend?
If Moscow attacks a NATO state, the US under Trump could ignore the NATO Charter and refuse to help. Trump has repeatedly stressed that he will not defend NATO members that he believes do not pay enough. He also threatened to withdraw the US from NATO if the other states do not meet his financial demands.
US President could withdraw thousands of troops from Europe
Last year, Trump said at a rally in North Carolina that he would "encourage" Russia to attack NATO states that do not spend enough on their defense. In addition, according to Newsweek, Trump is apparently planning to withdraw 20,000 US soldiers from Europe, which could further weaken security. The US president recently said that he could imagine a security agreement with Ukraine if the US gets access to its rare earths.
