Kiev. Under the auspices of a radical change of course by US President Donald Trump in dealing with the Ukraine war, his special envoy Keith Kellogg has traveled to Kiev.
On Wednesday, Kellogg arrived in the Ukrainian capital for talks with head of state Volodymyr Selenskyj and the military leadership. Only on Tuesday, Trump had practically blamed Selenskyj for the fact that the Russian war of aggression against his country is still ongoing.
Ukraine "should never have started it," said Trump, referring to the war that began when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In addition, Kiev "could have made a deal" to prevent the war, Trump claimed to reporters at his private club Mar-a-Lago in Florida. He also reacted with derision to criticism from Kiev of the decision not to invite Ukrainian representatives to a meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the Saudi capital Riyadh, which discussed possible ways to end the war in Ukraine. European top diplomats were also left out of the talks in Riyadh.
Trump's comments are likely to have angered the Ukrainian government, which has repeatedly asked the West for military assistance to fend off the Russian invasion. Zelenskyj canceled a trip to Saudi Arabia planned for Wednesday at short notice in order, according to some observers, to avoid his visit being linked to the high-level meeting between the US and Russia.
Special envoy Kellogg said his visit to Kiev was "a good opportunity for some good, substantive talks."
