After the pressure on him grew steadily in recent days, Joe Biden himself put an end to the rumors about his future. On Sunday, the US President announced on the short message service X that he was withdrawing from the race for the US presidency and renouncing the office as the Democratic candidate. Vice President Kamala Harris now has his "full support".
Numerous politicians in Germany welcomed Biden's decision and paid respect to the US President. "President Biden has corrected his mistake of running again late, but not too late," wrote CDU foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen on X. That, too, deserves the greatest respect. "The Democratic Party now has the chance to turn the election campaign around again," said Röttgen.
Biden's decision was also welcomed within the Democratic Party.
"President Biden is an extraordinary, historic president - a leader who fought hard for working people and achieved amazing results for all Americans," wrote Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, on X. Biden would go down in history as one of the most effective and selfless presidents. Newsom has been touted in recent weeks as a possible successor to Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate.
With his decision on Sunday, the 81-year-old is following numerous calls from the party leadership and base as well as both chambers of the US Congress. The background to this is doubts about the president's mental fitness and his ability to beat Donald Trump in the US presidential election in November.
