'BOUND TOGETHER' Prince Charles says ‘no country is an island’ as he vows Britain will remain close to Germany amid Brexit talks deadline

PRINCE Charles today insisted "no country is an island" as he vowed Britain would remain close to Germany - days before Britain's unofficial deadline for a Brexit deal expires.
The future king said the two countries had been "bound tightly together" - and their destinies would continue to be "interdependent".
Prince Charles today insisted no country was an island as he delivered an address to Germany.
In his address to the German lower house of parliament Bundestag, the 72-year-old admitted the UK's future was "evolving" but said his "heartfelt belief" the countries would continue to have a "fundamental bond".
His comments were his most direct reference to Britain's decision to leave the European Union (EU) to date.
Speaking today, the royal said: "The English poet, John Donne, famously wrote that 'no man is an island entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.'
"One might equally submit that no country is really an island either, other than in the wholly literal sense.
"Our histories bind us tightly together and our destinies, although each our own to forge, are interdependent to a considerable degree.
"The United Kingdom has chosen a future outside the European Union, and the relationship between our countries is evolving once again.
"Its shape is a matter negotiated between our governments and its essence is defined by the enduring connections between our people.
"It is, therefore, my heartfelt belief that the fundamental bond between us will remain strong: we will always be friends, partners and allies."
The heir to the throne's speech was made as the UK's chief Brexit negotiator said a trade deal with the EU may not succeed, but he is still hopeful of a resolution as the talks go down to the wire this week.
A trade deal deadline of November 15 had been set by Boris Johnson and the European Commission - however November 19 is now viewed as the final deadline for a draft Brexit deal.
Royals are expected to not weigh in on politics, and instead must remain neutral while using their profile to raise awareness for charities and other causes.
The royal delivered a passionate speech in praise of the bonds of friendship
But Charles, who delivered part of his address in German, touched on the new political climate between the countries.
Speaking this afternoon in Berlin, he added: "As our countries begin this new chapter in our long history, let us reaffirm our bond for the years ahead.
"Let us reflect on all that we have been through together, and all that we have learned.
"Let us remember all victims of war, tyranny and persecution; those who laid down their lives for the freedoms we cherish, and those who struggle for these freedoms to this day.
"They inspire us to strive for a better tomorrow – let us make this our common cause."
ROYAL REMEMBRANCE
Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall had travelled to Germany on Saturday for the National Day of Mourning.
The couple today attended the Neue Wache memorial to victims of war and tyranny
A wreath had been laid on behalf of the prince at the centre of the stone memorial in front of a lone sculpture titled Mother With Her Dead Son by German artist Kathe Kollwitz, designed in memory of her own son who died in the First World War.
The royal couple stepped forward together and touch their wreaths in the German tradition of symbolically tidying the ribbons, before a moment of silence.
The message on the prince's poppy wreath read: "In everlasting remembrance of all victims of conflict and tyranny. Charles."
A solo trumpeter then played The Good Comrade for the touching memorial at Neue Wache - New Guardhouse - home to the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Victims of War and Tyranny.
The royal pair had earlier been officially welcomed to Germany by the country's president ahead of events commemorating the National Day of Mourning.
Charles, 72, and Camilla, 73, were greeted by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender on the steps of the Bellevue Palace in Berlin.
The foursome exchanged namaste welcomes - clasping their hands together and bowing their heads - before posing for a socially distanced photograph.
Mr Steinmeier ushered his guests inside the 18th-century palace which is his official residence and invited them to sign the guests' book.
When inside the building Charles took his mask off and quipped: "At least you can see us smiling now."
The prince and his wife arrived on Saturday evening on Charles' 72nd birthday, after becoming the first VIPs to travel in the ministerial jet RAF Voyager following its repainting costing almost £1 million.
Charles celebrated his 72nd birthday yesterday - marking the occasion with a cake on the plane. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
