Martin Schulz resigns to be Germany’s foreign minister

The leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Martin Schulz, announced on Friday that he was resigning to be foreign minister in the next government of Angela Merkel, responding to the criticism received in his own party.
“I declare that I renounce entering the government,” Schulz said in a statement. After the agreement concluded on Wednesday with Merkel, Schulz had vindicated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, despite the fact that during the campaign he had sworn that he would never join a cabinet headed by the current foreign minister.
However, this coalition still has to obtain the approval of the social democratic militancy in an internal referendum whose result is scheduled for March 4. Schulz explained that he was retiring to avoid reviving his opponents.
“Debates about me threaten the success of the vote, and I hereby declare that I am refusing to enter the government,” he said in a statement.
The head of the SPD, which led the party to its lowest level in the elections of September last year, was attacked in harsh terms on Thursday night by his predecessor in the formation and current foreign minister.
“What remains is only repentance to see to what extent in our SPD party we act with little respect against each other and see that little or nothing is worth the word,” Minister Sigmar Gabriel judged.
The fourth government of Angela Merkel is receiving criticism from all fronts and has not yet taken office. Several conservatives blame the chancellor for having made too many concessions to the SPD to stay in office.
