Trump protests in New York City
Demonstrations against the Trump administration during the past year have come in all shapes and sizes: protests, rallies and marches, sit-ins, die-ins and banners unfurled in the Trump Tower lobby.
Although Trump Tower has been a favorite of protesters, demonstrations have taken place across the city, including at Trump International Hotel and Tower, Stonewall National Monument, Battery Park, Tompkins Square Park, Washington Square Park, Times Square and outside Kennedy Airport, where some travelers were detained when Trump's original travel ban went into effect in January.
Protests were also held during the three times Trump has returned to the city since taking office. In September, three congressional Democrats and then-City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito were arrested during a DACA rally outside Trump Tower.
Here’s a look at other demonstrations and protests planned in the city — and what their organizers say on social media.
2018 Women's March on NYC
When: Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m.
Where: Columbus Circle, Manhattan
"Over the past year, basic rights for women, immigrants, LGBTQ+, the religious and nonreligious, people of color and even Mother Earth have struggled to survive under the weight of the current administration. America’s First Amendment has been challenged and health care for millions has been threatened. We must stand together to demand and defend our rights. Let your voice echo from the streets of New York City to the capital city. Show the world that red, white and blue are colors of tolerance."
Take a Knee against Tyranny
When: Saturday, Jan. 20, at 9 a.m.
Where: Trump Tower, 725 Fifth Ave., Manhattan
"Peaceful protest on the anniversary of Inauguration Day."
Rally against Trump and Capitalism! #DaysofRage
When: Saturday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m.
Where: Grand Central Terminal, 89 E. 42nd St., Manhattan
"Since January 20th 2017, our class has been under attack with ICE raids, state repression, killer cops and deep cuts into what's left of our social safety net. Hundreds of activists are facing felony charges for protesting against this racist misogynist regime. Tens of thousands of families are being deported or incarcerated for simply being born. The drive for war goes faster and we all get poorer.
We don’t have to live like this. The Democrats have shown they can’t save us. They can’t even defend an election they say was stolen from them. Across the country, we are tirelessly mobilizing against white supremacy, war and capitalism. It's only by getting organized, putting the ruling class on notice and making our people power known that we have any hope of fightback.
We will fight for our lives by taking to the streets across the country to address the core problem of all our miseries: a regime that arrests us, dispossesses us, poisons us, bashes us, evicts us, and kills us."
Stare at Trump Tower
When: Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at 7 p.m.
Where: Trump Tower, 725 Fifth Ave., Manhattan
"A year from the date of [Trump's] inauguration, let's let him know we're still here. Gather your people and come to NYC to peacefully and silently stare at Trump Tower. As many people as possible should come."
Revolt against Rebekah Mercer at AMNH
When: Sunday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m.
Where: American Museum of Natural History, Manhattan
"Rebekah Mercer is known as 'the first lady of the alt-right.' Not only is she a stakeholder in Breitbart News, but she and her father — hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer — played a major role in getting Donald Trump elected as president.
The Mercer Foundation, run by Rebekah, has poured millions of dollars into groups that deny climate change — some estimates say up to $22 million. One of these groups is the leading climate change denial think tank Heartland Institute which, in their words, 'persuaded Trump that man-made global warming is not a crisis.'
So what is Rebekah Mercer doing on the board of trustees at the American Museum of Natural History?
Join Revolting Lesbians at the American Museum of Natural History on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. to tell the museum we want Rebekah Mercer out! All are welcome to join."
Occupy Wall Street 2018..Remembering King as we resist Trump
When: Monday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.
Where: 60 Wall St., Manhattan
"Please join us as we restart the spirit of the Occupy Wall Street Movement by remembering [Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.] as this marks the 50th year of the assassination of Dr. King by forces loyal to U.S. government found succinctly in the regime of Donald Trump, and also corridors of the DNC and its Neo-liberal policies that Dr. King himself was preparing to march and organize against with his Poor People's Campaign shortly before his assassination."
March For Our Future
When: Sunday, April 22, at noon
Where: United Nations Headquarters, Manhattan
"Donald Trump is the president of the United States, but he refuses to lead. His decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement undermines the commitment by nearly 200 countries to work together in order to save our planet and those who inhabit it. More so than ever before, it is incumbent upon all of us to answer the global call to action by creating and sustaining positive impact in our own communities. Join us as we stand united with the rest of the world and March For Our Future in NYC and in cities across the globe. We will not only celebrate the impact we've made in response to President Trump's withdrawal, but collectively build a movement that accelerates the impact spearheaded by environmental leaders and organizations on the front lines of this existential threat."
