An
image purportedly showing President Donald Trump saving two cats from a
flooded street after Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas is a
digitally-manipulated fake. The photo is just one of many altered images to circulate social media in the days following the catastrophic flooding.
According to Snopes, the Photoshopped image claimed to show a “Make America Great Againt” hat-wearing Trump carrying two cats while walking through the floodwaters in Texas. The photo, however, is not real and was originally taken in Iowa in 2008.
The real photo was taken by David Greedy in June 2008 and shows a man saving his cats from floodwaters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The caption from Getty Images reads:
The New York Times also featured the image in “Pictures of the Day,” explaining that one of the cats got loose for several minutes. Smith then scooped the cat up again and continued to evacuate the flooded area.
Other fake photos from Harvey, which made landfall on Aug. 25 and was later downgraded to a tropical storm, include a Navy destroyer colliding with a building in downtown Houston, a shark swimming down a freeway and Trump rescuing victims from floodwaters. Of course, presidents are generally not directly involved in rescue efforts after natural disasters.
The White House indicated last week that Trump, who returned to Texas this weekend to visit those affected by the storm, personally pledged $1 million to relief efforts. ABC News reports that Trump plans to make the donation next week, though the adminsitration has not yet confirmed which charitable group or groups will receive the money.

Brandon Smith carries his two cats, Fry and Bender, to dry land from their flooded and evacuated home on June 12, 2008 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Much of the city has been evacuated as the Cedar River continues to rise to record levels. More rains are predicted over the next few days.
