Trump insults Biden: "Useless and incompetent" – then even brings up the dead former president

Astrid Lund - Betty MacDonald fan club organizer: "Donald Trump effortlessly manages to repeatedly undercut his very low standards. That's quite an achievement, too." -------------------------------------------- EXPRESS Trump insults Biden: "Useless and incompetent" – then even brings up the dead former president 5 hours • 2 minutes reading time That was to be expected: Donald Trump (78) has responded to the criticism of former US President Joe Biden (82). The retaliation for his Democratic predecessor was correspondingly drastic. "They were useless. They were incompetent," the Republican said at a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House. Then Trump really got going. Trump: "Jimmy Carter died a happy man because he wasn't the worst president." The Biden administration was the "worst in US history" – even "worse than Jimmy Carter's," Trump said. "Jimmy Carter died a happy man. You know why? Because he wasn't the worst president. That was Joe Biden." The 82-year-old Biden spoke publicly about Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday for the first time since withdrawing as presidential candidate. Biden accused Trump of dividing the country. Biden said "less than 100 days" had passed, and already the new US administration had "caused so much damage and so much destruction." An accusation that Trump, of course, denies. The 78-year-old, however, repeated his oft-refuted claim that fraud occurred in the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Biden – a narrative that contributed to the violent storming of the Capitol by radicalized Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. "The only thing the last administration was good at was cheating in elections. That's pretty much all they've been able to do," Trump said again. Carter died last December at the age of 100. The Democrat held the presidency from 1977 to 1981. Following his death, then-President Biden ordered a 30-day period of mourning. As a result, US flags on public buildings flew at half-staff during Trump's second inauguration in January – which clearly angered Trump. Despite his criticism, he paid tribute to the late Carter, visited his coffin in state at the Capitol, and, like Biden, attended the state funeral. However, as one of his first official acts after being sworn in, he decreed that flags should always be flown at full height during presidential transitions. (dpa/susa)
