Hong Kong (Reuters) - The Hong Kong Post Office will no longer deliver parcels by sea to the US.
As of April 27, airmail service to the United States will also be suspended, the post office announced on Wednesday. The reason given is the "vexorious" US tariffs. When shipping goods to the US, Hong Kong residents must be prepared to pay "exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the unreasonable and tyrannical measures of the US," the Hong Kong Post said in a statement. Other mail containing only documents without goods will not be affected.
"The US is behaving unreasonably, tyrannizing, and abusively imposing tariffs," it said. "The Hong Kong Post Office will definitely not collect so-called tariffs on behalf of the US." According to a statement from the US government, the Chinese special administrative region was subject to the same tariffs as the People's Republic.
The former British colony was long known as a free and open trading center. However, the security law imposed by China in 2020 provoked sharp criticism, including from the US. The financial center's special status under US law was revoked.
