London (dts News Agency) - US President Donald Trump's demand to import more gas from the US is putting the EU in a difficult position. Trump wants the EU to import $350 billion worth of oil and gas from the US. However, this is unrealistic, as figures from the raw materials information service Argus Media show.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jörgensen told the "Handelsblatt" (Tuesday edition): "Basically, there is potential for more American gas." But: "How much it will be and when it will be available cannot yet be said."
The figures from Argus show: In total, the EU imported around €60 billion worth of energy from the US last year. At current exchange rates, this equates to approximately $68 billion. That's one-fifth of the value of energy imports the US president is now demanding.
An increase in imports from the US would be just what the EU needs to become less dependent on Russian natural gas. However, the EU doesn't want to be blackmailed politically or economically. The EU is currently intensively examining which partners could replace Russian fossil fuels in the future and under what conditions cooperation would be sensible, a high-ranking EU official told the "Handelsblatt" newspaper.
