US President Donald Trump says he feels better in his second term than in his first. "The first time, I had two things to do – run the country and survive," he told The Atlantic magazine, which had sparked the scandal surrounding the Signal group chat about an upcoming US military operation in Yemen. Back then, he said, he still had "all these crooked guys" around him. "The second time, I run the country and the world." Trump left it open who he meant by "crooked guys."
The fact that Trump gave an interview to The Atlantic also surprised the editorial staff – after all, it was Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg who had made the sensitive Signal group chat public, thus putting the administration in a difficult position to explain. Goldberg was inadvertently brought into the group with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other Cabinet members by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
Although Trump called him a "scumbag" after the publication of the content and repeatedly disparaged the magazine, he now granted Goldberg and other Atlantic reporters the interview. He had previously stated that he was doing it out of curiosity and to see if the magazine could also report the truth.
Trump on Hegseth: "He'll Get It Done"
The content of the conversation was unspectacular. When asked about the unrest in the Pentagon, where Defense Secretary Hegseth is under pressure due to the signals scandal and the departure of numerous close aides, Trump replied: "I had a conversation with him." The conversation was positive. "I think he'll get it done."
The authors wrote that Trump spoke almost sympathetically about the opposition in the interview. The Democrats had lost their confidence and lacked a leader. "I can't tell you who her boss is. I can't tell you I see someone on the horizon."
