DHL stops deliveries to the USA: These goods and shipments are affected

Rule applies worldwide
DHL will immediately stop deliveries to the USA for certain goods. How long the suspension will last was not initially known.
Washington/Beijing – In the trade war between the USA and China, more and more companies are having to take a stand. Tariffs of up to 245 percent on certain products from China are hitting supply chains hard. In the next two weeks, the first companies will raise their prices, including discount retailers Shein and Temu, but also luxury retailer Hermès and some car manufacturers. As it now turns out, however, it is also questionable whether consumers will even be able to get their goods in the future.
For example, DHL will no longer ship shipments worth more than $800 to the USA with immediate effect. According to a message on DHL's website for business customers, the new regulation will take effect on Monday, April 21.
The reason given is that shipments to the USA are expected to experience delivery delays of several days. This is partly due to customs duties, but also to another new rule introduced by the US Customs Authority: From now on, goods worth at least $800 must also go through the formal import procedure. Previously, this only applied to goods worth $2,500 or more.
In addition, goods worth less than $800 are no longer exempt from customs duties. US President Donald Trump has also lifted this limit.
Formal import procedure into the USA is complex – DHL would have to invest a lot of money
To complete the formal import procedure, senders and recipients usually have to fill out numerous documents, including information such as a commercial invoice, packing list, proof of origin, customs tariff number, and often also provide proof of special licenses. Verifying this information, of course, takes more time – the importing company often appoints a special official for this purpose. This would mean significant additional costs for DHL to import goods into the US starting at $800. Apparently, it would be cheaper to stop the business altogether.
DHL adds, however, that the suspension does not apply to goods between companies, but only to shipments from companies to end customers in the US. Business customers should, however, be prepared for shipment delays.
Goods from Germany to the US also affected by the suspension
DHL's move applies worldwide, including to goods from Germany that are to be sent to the US.
The announcement comes just days after the Hong Kong Post Office completely stopped shipping goods to the US. It cited the "harassing" US tariffs as the reason. When shipping goods to the United States, Hong Kong residents should be prepared to pay "exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the unreasonable and tyrannical measures of the United States," the Hong Kong Post said in a statement. Other mail items containing only documents without goods are not affected.
