What do Germans laugh about?
Can Germans be humorous? Seriously? A quick look at the evidence.
01.08.2017
Comedy
dpa
Germany. “The shortest book in the world? The book of German jokes!” A young woman told this corny joke in a street survey. It was about German humour which a lot of people reckon is an unconfirmed rumour. Mark Twain supposedly once said: “A German joke is no laughing matter.” And ever since then, criticism of German humour has never ceased. In 2016, for instance, the British magazine The Economist received much approval for a lengthy article that played on Twain’s one-time observation: “Being German is no laughing matter”.
One of the key messages in Mark Twain’s article is that Germans do not understand irony. That is not true of course. For instance, a German Institute for Humour was founded in 2005, and it assures us that we definitely know how to use irony. No, seriously, we really are able to laugh at a lot of things.
Jokes
There is a huge wealth of jokes. The German love of order has ensured that jokes have been neatly categorized for decades. Drivers of the Manta car, which is now no longer produced, were the object of many a joke, as were the people of East Friesland. And some really classic jokes target German civil servants who supposedly belong to a very lethargic professional body. How about an example? Civil service Mikado: anyone who moves has lost.
A German joke is no laughing matter.
Mark Twain
Comedy
Corny jokes are on the way out in Germany. Comedy is in. Comedians, such as Mario Barth with his Berlin dialect, or German-Turkish Bülent Ceylan from Mannheim, fill whole arenas. And there are some very funny women too: Carolin Kebekus, who likes to provoke with cheeky, incredibly dry humour; Monika Gruber from Bavaria with her cuttingly smart commentaries and Tina Hill, who is an excellent slapstick artist and enjoys parodying Angela Merkel. And there are many more. Many successful comedians in Germany come from families who came from overseas. For instance, Abdelkarim, who rose to fame with his TV programme StandUpMigranten and likes to introduce himself as “your favourite Moroccan”, or the RebellComedy team whose members have roots in Iran, Egypt and Switzerland.
Satire
The German satirist Kurt Tucholsky (1890–1935) is regularly quoted with his famous saying: Satire is allowed to do anything. Television shows such as “extra 3” or the “heute-show” are successful news-format productions that lampoon German and international politics. No statesman is spared from this sarcasm. The background is often serious and spotlights explosive topics in German society. In his show Neo Magazin Royale, the satirist Jan Böhmermann likes to push the boundaries of artistic freedom and bad taste. His success even earned him a guest appearance in the show by his American colleague Seth Meyers. One of Böhmermann’s best quips: “In Germany we’re allowed to say anything at all – as long as we don’t use irony or humour.”

Appreciated and ridiculed: the double Boris Becker
November 30, 2020
The German tennis hero withdraws from the DTB. A loss because he has a lot to give in his sport. Here it is different from the focus of the boulevard. There are basically two people Boris Becker.
It is part of Boris Becker’s fate that many people think they know him. Not just the public person, but also the people behind it. “Our Boris”, “Bobbele”, “Boom-Boom-Boris”. Becker was and is one of the biggest sports stars Germany has ever had. Hardly any tennis player on the court let the audience participate so directly in his soul life. And next to the square, hardly any other celebrity provided so much visual material on the trials and tribulations of life. Everything together creates a closeness that is deceptive.
Becker is currently fighting with the authorities in his adopted home of London as part of private bankruptcy proceedings. They accuse him of having embezzled assets and possessions, among other things. Becker vigorously denies this. This week he announced that he would give up his position as “Head of Men’s Tennis” at the German Tennis Association (DTB). He said that he “unfortunately has no more time” for this task at the moment. At the association, they expressed sincere regrets.

(CNN)Despite what President Donald Trump is tweeting and saying publicly in the wake of Arizona and Wisconsin certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory Monday, Trump sees the scoreboard and understands he has no chance of hanging on to the presidency, two White House advisers told CNN.
Asked whether the President realizes that he's been defeated, a close adviser who has been in contact with Trump about his legal strategy said Monday: "Yes, he does."
The same adviser told CNN that Trump will continue to pursue his legal challenges until they are exhausted, but that adviser pointed to the certification in Wisconsin and said, "The writing is on the wall." Without the ability to override the results in a combination of states, not to mention even one state, the adviser said Trump's election challenges are obviously doomed.
Trump is still sounding as if he could still win because he wants to believe it, the adviser continued. But the adviser added Trump is fully aware that he has lost.
Trump has not conceded the election and he still falsely claims that he won, but his administration has approved access to transition materials and national security briefings for Biden and his team.
A separate adviser said the President has understood for some time that it is unlikely he will be able to overturn the election results but that Trump simply does not want to say that out loud.
There may be another reason for the reticence: since Election Day, Trump and his political operation have raised more than $170 million, a person familiar with the matter said -- a massive fundraising haul fueled by Trump's baseless allegations that the election was rigged. In all, the campaign has sent 400 fundraising emails and another 125 texts between 11 p.m. Election Night and early Tuesday morning.
One campaign adviser confirmed the $170 million number and said it's a big indication that Trump "isn't going anywhere."
The adviser said there is already talk of Trump doing some extensive post-presidency travel, including overseas trips to maintain his visibility.
Certifying election results is typically a formality, but the process had been the subject of Trump's long-shot attempt to cling onto power. His campaign has unsuccessfully tried to block or delay certification in key states in hopes of overturning Biden's victory through the Electoral College.
Those efforts, though, are nearing an end as states continue to certify their results ahead of the Electoral College meeting on December 14.
Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers formally certified Biden's victory on Monday, signing the paperwork to award the state's 10 electoral votes to the President-elect after a Trump campaign-requested recount in Wisconsin's two most populous counties.
Arizona also certified its election results on Monday, awarding the state's 11 electoral votes to Biden and clearing the way for Senator-elect Mark Kelly, a Democrat, to be sworn in this week.
Pennsylvania and Nevada each completed their certification processes last week.
Republican Gov. Doug Ducey praised the integrity of Arizona's election system after witnessing Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, certify the election results Monday morning, as required by state law. Ducey said he would sign official documentation on Monday and have it hand-delivered to the president of the US Senate, so that Kelly "can be sworn in as swiftly as possible."
In several tweets Monday night, Trump accused Ducey of "rushing to put a Democrat in office," making baseless voter fraud allegations and vowing that "Republicans will long remember!"
Trump then sent a number of retweets about Ducey, including one that read, "Who needs Democrats when you have Republicans like Brian Kemp and Doug Ducey?" The President has also recently attacked Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, another member of his own party, over fraud allegations.
CNN's Nikki Carvajal, Bob Ortega, Samira Said, Marshall Cohen, Fredreka Schouten, Jeremy Diamond, Betsy Klein and Devan Cole contributed to this report.

Artists are bound to tap into greatness when they draw inspiration from artists such as Mary J. Blidge and Aretha Franklin. Joy Denalane of Berlin, Germany has spent years perfecting her sound and developing the identity which has crowned her the “Queen of Soul” in Germany. A title that for sure holds weight, immediately makes one ask: Who is this woman? Raised in the divided city of Berlin to a German mother and South African father, Joy’s music embodies the spirit of the global, sensitive, motherly Black woman.
Joy Denalane comes from such a culturally diverse background in which these influences are portrayed in her music. Creating soul/R&B music allows you to combine so many elements that puts Joy in such a versatile category. When you think of soul, you think of the feeling the music evokes. That’s the goal. Most of these artists put their heart on the line. Joy’s music offered a serene feel, with a voice so pleasant you could listen to all day.
“Let Yourself Be Loved” released in September, features astounding acts such as BJ The Chicago Kid and C.S. Armstrong. It tells a story of self-love, giving love to others and simply, allowing love into your life.
In our interview, Joy takes a minute to explain the high expectations that come with the “Queen of Soul” title. We discuss the importance of leading with love and signing with Motown Records.
Ci: Why do you feel singing about love and the essence of love itself is important? Why should it be prevalent in music today?
Joy: I believe that love is one of the essential feelings that a human being can have. We are all searching for it and it helps us to understand the world better and helps us find a safe space in the world. So I believe that it’s a natural thing to talk about – Love in song – ever since there was music with lyrics we’re talking about love in all its ways and that should continue.
Ci: You were inspired by music of the 60’s and 70s. What about that era of soul is intriguing and/or inspiring to you?
Joy: It pretty much was a concept. I grew up with my father’s record collection, which was filled with soul music from that era’s 60s, 70s, and even 80s; soul music in all its facets. It was interesting because that’s pretty much the first music that I started listening to from a young age.
Ci: If there was one artist from that time period you’d want to work with, who would it be and why?
Joy: That question is hard because there’s never only one person you want to work with or would have wanted to work with. I would for now pick Marvin Gaye because Marvin Gaye was not only a great singer, was a great voice, but he was also a guy who had great messages, so that combination just made him undefeatable.
Ci: What does Let Yourself Be Loved mean to you? How does this album show or define your growth as an artist and individual?
Joy: Let Yourself Be Loved means to let love in your life. Really it’s as simple as that, and as simple as it sounds it’s probably harder because a lot of times people don’t really feel like they’re lovable enough, and I’m trying to tell them that they are. So for my growth – what my growth is or not – I can’t really judge that I think it has a lot to do with what other people think all I can say is that I’m trying to become better every time I do something and I’ve been singing for quite a while, and I’ve never had the feeling of “OK this is it I’m a finished Singer” or anything like that there’s never – interesting to me because once you think you’re done it becomes boring so yes, I keep searching.
How would you describe your unique sound of soul?
I don’t really know how to describe my sound. I would probably say I’m trying to be as good as possible and I’m inspired by a lot of singers – old singers, new singers – I am just intrigued by quality. Whenever I hear somebody that does something that I have never heard, I’m trying to imitate that. But I mean at the end of the day obviously I have my own sound I do have my own voice so it will never really sound like that. I don’t know, I feel like maybe I sound honest at the end of the day. I’m trying to.
What do you think about the future of soul music and where it is headed?
I think people will always love to listen to Soul music. But it also depends on how you define “soul music,” soul music to me is R&B, it’s contemporary music. I mean soul needs to be able to be honest, to tell the truth, to speak about your feelings, whether it comes in a retro kind of sound or very modern, it doesn’t really matter to me. Soul is something that’s honest and it will always speak to your heart because it’s coming from somebody’s heart.
Signing with Motown is huge! Tell me about how that came about.
Signing with Motown really is huge. I mean I still to this day I don’t really know what happened exactly. All I know is I was in the studio recording the record and once I was done I started playing it for people for my colleagues and there was one who loved it so much and he offered me to take it to Motown to play it for them which he did, and the next thing I know is he comes back with a contract and an offer and I was absolutely blown away. Until today I still don’t really know how all of this came about but I guess they liked it.
Being referred to as the German Queen of Soul is a honoring title. How has your influence back home aided in your career? How did you get to such a deserving point?
I felt honored when people started calling me the Queen of German Soul, but I must honestly say that I would have never come up with that with a title like that. I always thought it was friendly but a bit funny too. All I can say is that I always try to sing as good as possible and like I said I’m trying to learn every day. Still it has helped my career a lot of times because people thought of me as something before they even knew how I sounded just because of the title, but sometimes it can also be a bit difficult because people have very high expectations. Sometimes you’re not where you want to be in terms of quality, but I mean I must say all in all, I’m not mad.
Growing up in Berlin I’d imagine is a much different experience than that of Black Americans. What was that like for you?
Growing up in Berlin was quite interesting, specifically because I grew up in the time when the city was still divided into two halves. The wall was still standing, and that made Berlin a little bit like an island. We had to drive through the former east in order to get into the west. We pretty much were on an island and a lot of people came from all over the world to live there. Being that it was such an easy place to make a living, there were a lot of interesting people.
In terms of being black in Berlin, and in Germany in general, I thought it was a bit tough as a young girl and a young woman because there’s a real small minority of Black people in Germany. That has changed a little bit but it’s not comparable to the United States at all.
What is the soul music scene like in Germany? What advice would you give to any Newcomers?
I think the soul scene in Germany has changed a lot because there are many more artists. And very good ones too! So it’s fun. And pretty much my advice is, and always has been, try to be yourself and find good people. Find people who appreciate what you’re doing. Find honest people that will tell you the truth when you’re not that good and don’t let anybody tell you to change when you feel like you shouldn’t.
What song did you enjoy creating the most? Explain that creative process for you.
I loved creating “Be Here In The Morning” a lot because I mean it was a very heartfelt song and at first it wasn’t a duet obviously, but it was a song with two verses that were sung by me and I thought that the melody was quite interesting. Then the transformation of the song from the demo into what it is today was also super interesting because it was more kind of a reggae vibe in the beginning when we were in the studio and then once we started producing it, it like totally changed into a soul classic and that was really like the transformation of a butterfly to me.
Your song “Top of My Love” explain the message/concept behind that.
“Top of My Love” is pretty much deals with self-love. Also, how much love you need during times when you feel lonely and left alone pretty much. There were moments in my life where I had to find my own path. You don’t want to distract from other voices and I now trust in myself. I also trust the love that I receive from my family and count on that.
I’m sure Covid has been restricting your traveling and performing. Where are you keeping safe currently? How are you keeping busy?
Yes, Covid has really slowed down a lot of things and specifically in terms of playing live. Obviously, we cannot play concerts really and that is a very very sad part of it, besides others of course. When asking about my musicianship and my career as a singer, that part is really super slow right now. It’s sad because specifically, that album is perfect for live shows.
So that’s the sad part, but I would also say that I’m very busy with my campaign and that I am doing a lot of interviews. I mean I am thankful I must say that and there’s a lot of attention on the record because people seem to really like it. I am just thankful and I’m trying to stay busy.
Any messages to your fans? Music lovers? Or anyone reading this interview….
I want to tell you guys let love in your life. Let it come in and accept that you are a lovable person. Also, love back and be nice to people. Be nice to people and stop hating. Don’t hate, don’t be too skeptical, but be an open minded person with an open loving heart. Also, stay safe and happy.

World Aids Day
World AIDS Day
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The red ribbon is the global symbol for solidarity with HIV-positive people and those living with AIDS.
Observed by All UN Member States
Date 1 December
Frequency Annual
First time 1988; 32 years ago
World AIDS Day, designated on 1 December every year since 1988,[1] is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The HIV virus attacks the immune system of the patient and reduces its resistance to other diseases.[2] Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations, and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.
World AIDS Day is one of the eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Patient Safety Day and World Chagas Disease Day.[3]
As of 2017, AIDS has killed between 28.9 million and 41.5 million people worldwide, and an estimated 36.7 million people are living with HIV,[4] making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Thanks to recent improved access to antiretroviral treatment in many regions of the world, the death rate from AIDS epidemic has decreased since its peak in 2005 (1 million in 2016, compared to 1.9 million in 2005).[4]
Russian stamp, 1993
World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.[5][6] Bunn and Netter took their idea to Dr. Jonathan Mann, Director of the Global Programme on AIDS (now known as UNAIDS). Dr. Mann liked the concept, approved it, and agreed with the recommendation that the first observance of World AIDS Day should be on 1 December 1988.[7] Bunn, a former television broadcast journalist from San Francisco, had recommended the date of 1 December that believing it would maximize coverage of World AIDS Day by western news media, sufficiently long following the US elections but before the Christmas holidays.[7]
In its first two years, the theme of World AIDS Day focused on children and young people. While the choice of this theme was criticized at the time by some for ignoring the fact that people of all ages may become infected with HIV, the theme helped alleviate some of the stigma surrounding the disease and boost recognition of the problem as a family disease.[8]
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) became operational in 1996, and it took over the planning and promotion of World AIDS Day.[8] Rather than focus on a single day, UNAIDS created the World AIDS Campaign in 1997 to focus on year-round communications, prevention and education.[8][9] In 2004, the World AIDS Campaign became an independent organization.[8][9][10]
Each year, Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have released a greeting message for patients and doctors on World AIDS Day.[11][12][13][14][15]
In 2016, a collection of HIV and AIDS-related NGOs (including Panagea Global AIDS and The AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa) started a campaign to rename World AIDS Day to World HIV Day. They claim the change will emphasize social justice issues, and the advancement of treatments like PrEP.[16]
In the USA, the White House began marking World AIDS Day with the iconic display of a 28 foot (8.5 m) AIDS Ribbon on the building's North Portico in 2007.[17][18] White House aide Steven M. Levine, then serving in President George W. Bush's administration, proposed the display to symbolize the United States' commitment to combat the world AIDS epidemic through its landmark PEPFAR program.[19] The White House display, now an annual tradition across four presidential administrations, quickly garnered attention, as it was the banner, sign or symbol to prominently hang from the White House since the Abraham Lincoln administration.[20][21][22]
Since 1993, the President of the United States has made an official proclamation for World AIDS Day (see section #US Presidential Proclamations for World AIDS Day for copies of those proclamations). On 30 November 2017, President Donald Trump proclaimed World AIDS Day for 1 December.[23][24]
As of 1 December 2020 the HIV pandemic has dropped with 60% around the world, due to the ongoing pandemic COVID-19.[25]
Themes
All the World AIDS Day campaigns focus on a specific theme, chosen following consultations with UNAIDS, WHO, and a large number of grassroots, national and international agencies involved in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. As of 2008, each year's theme is chosen by the Global Steering Committee of the World AIDS Campaign (WAC).[8]
For each World AIDS Day from 2005 through 2010, the theme was "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise", designed to encourage political leaders to keep their commitment to achieving universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support by the year 2010.[8]
As of 2012, the multi-year theme for World AIDS Day is "Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero deaths from AIDS-related illness. Zero discrimination."[26] The US Federal theme for the year 2014 is "Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-Free Generation".[27]
The themes are not limited to a single day but are used year-round in international efforts to highlight HIV/AIDS awareness within the context of other major global events including the G8 Summit, as well as local campaigns like the Student Stop AIDS Campaign in the UK.[citation needed]
