Sweden's Foreign Ministry on Monday subpoenaed the Russian ambassador in Stockholm, Viktor Tatárintsev, over a social media post by the Russian embassy in which he allegedly described a Swedish citizen killed in Ukraine as an "ordinary mercenary".
In the post published on Facebook, the Russian Embassy in Sweden called on journalists to be "rigorous" about published reports of the death of a Swedish citizen in the war in Ukraine, questioning the veracity of the news and the Swedish citizens as "common mercenaries".
"It is deeply unfortunate that when preparing materials on the identity of a former Swedish Armed Forces officer, journalists have once again forgotten the most important tenet of their work: objectivity, while attempting to paint a positive and highly moral image of this ordinary mercenary." , says the Facebook message.
At a meeting this afternoon in the Swedish capital, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde reproached Tatárintsev for the post published by his embassy while condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine, SVT reports.
"The text is reprehensible and tasteless. The message does not say a word that it was Russia that started the war and that only Russia can end it," Linde told Dagens Nyhete.
On July 19, several Swedish media reported the death of a 28-year-old Ukrainian citizen who died near the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov while taking part in the war in Ukraine.
